The  Regional office of Sangeet Natak Akademi  – Sangeet Natak Akademi North-East Centre was set-up in the year 2008 at Shillong, Meghalaya,  which was later shifted to Guwahati, Assam in October 2011 with the aim of better co-ordination with all states of North-East.

The aims and objective of the  Centre is mainly to coordinate and implement the schemes, programmes and activities of the Akademi in North-East region for promotion and preservation of the performing arts of the region by initiating training programmes, organizing festivals, seminars, workshops, interaction programmes. etc on different aspects of performing arts and conducting of special documentation of art forms, festivals and fairs, interviews/demonstrations of eminent artists of the region. 

Since its inception, the Sangeet Natak Akademi North-East Centre has been regularly organizing festivals and workshops of Music, Dance, Theatre, Folk & Tribal and Traditional Art forms and puppetry in different parts of the North-Eastern region and also presenting the artistes/art forms of North-East in other parts of the country. The Centre has initiated training programmes in different folk,  traditional and tribal art forms of the region and has been documenting the festivals, fairs, art forms apart from the recording of interviews/lec-dem etc. of renowned personalities in the field of performing etc.,  for the archives of the Akademi.

 A  small Reference library for the benefit of research scholars, artists etc. has also been set up by the Centre at its office complex at  Usha Bhawan, Panjabari, Guwahati where more than 700 books on performing arts, anthropology etc. are available.
