Nayan Ghosh

Born on 28 April 1956 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Shri Nayan Ghosh received his initial training in tabla from his father Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. Later, he groomed his talent under the tutelage of Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa and Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh. He also received training in Sitar and vocal music from his father Pandit Nikhil Ghosh and later learnt from Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta.
Over the years, Shri Nayan Ghosh has won recognition as a distinguished Tabla player of Farukhabad gharana, but he is equally adept in Delhi, Ajrada and Lucknow gharanas of Tabla. He has trained many students in Tabla and Sitar. He has lectured at several institutions in India and abroad, and has been associated with a number of prestigious institutions such as ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata; Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwa Vidyalaya, Khairagarh; and I.I.T., Mumbai. He is the Managing Trustee and the Principal of Sangit Mahabharati at Mumbai. A top-grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Shri Nayan Ghosh has been on the concert platform for more than 45 years and has performed in almost all prestigious music festivals in India and abroad. He has distinguished himself both as a soloist and an accompanist and has accompanied many stalwarts of both Hindustani and Carnatic music.
Shri Nayan Ghosh has many recordings to his credit. He has received numerous titles and awards; these include the Taal Mani and Sur Mani conferred by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai (1985); the Achievement Award given by the Lt. Governor of California, USA; and the Swar Sadhana Ratna bestowed by Swar Sadhana Samiti, Mumbai (2013).
Shri Nayan Ghosh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014 for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
