Born in 1941 in Balurghat, West Bengal, Shri Hari Madhab Mukhopadhyay took his Master’s degree in commerce from Calcutta University and started his career as a lecturer in commerce at Balurghat College in 1967. He took to theatre early and set up a theatre group, Tarun Thirtha in 1956. During his formative years he learnt the skills of theatre working under the guidance of directors such as Jagamohan Mazumdar and Ajitesh Banerjee. In 1969 he established the Triteertha theatre group which produced many plays including Teen Bigyani, Jal, Galileo and Devanshi. A complete theatre activist Shri Mukhopadhyay also worked as an actor, musician, light designer, dress designer and scenic designer in his productions. He also wrote several plays. A leading name in amateur Bengali theatre, he worked principally in the North Bengal region. He is a recipient of honours including the Best Actor and Best Production Awards conferred by Paschim Banga Natya Akademi. Shri Hari Madhab Mukhopa- dhyay receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Indian theatre as a director.
