Born in 1924 in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Reoti Saran Sharma has been a prominent theatre activist right through his years of creative surge till today. A translation expert and retired Principal Hindi Officer in the Ministry of Defence, Govern- ment of India, Shri Sharma is the founder member and President of Bharatiya Natya Sangh, Delhi. Shri Sharma has written about a dozen significant plays in Hindi, almost all of which have been staged. Some of his noted plays are Purani Haveli, Chiragh ki Lau, Apni Dharti, Na Dharam na Iman, Andhere ka Beta, Deep Shikha, Raja Bali ki Nai Katha etc. He has also written many screen plays for television serials such as Aur Bhi Gham Hai Zamane Mein and Phir Wahi Talash. He has written several plays in Urdu as well. Besides, he has penned over 150 radio plays. Shri Sharma has further contributed to the cause of theatre through his long association with UNESCO’s International Theatre Institute, Paris — a body he has served in various capacities such as Vice President, Executive Committee member and Technical Adviser. He has read papers on Indian theatre in several international conferen- ces and contributed articles in various volumes of The World of Theatre. He has also actively contributed to Sangeet Natak Akademi’s support program- mes for young theatre artists. Shri Sharma has received several honours for his work including the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the Award of Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi in 1978, besides award from the Urdu Academy of Delhi. Shri Reoti Saran Sharma receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to playwriting in Hindi.
