Yumnam Rajendra Singh



Born in 1953 in Imphal, Shri Yumnam Rajendra Singh trained and worked in Manipuri theatre under the noted director Shri H. Kanhailal from 1973 to 1982. He also undertook training and research in traditional Manipuri clown acting. For the last thirty years he has been actively engaged in Manipuri theatre as a playwright and director. Till date he has written about thirty plays for the stage, radio and television. Among his noted plays are Lai Kushangbi (The Lengthy Hands), Matampakta (On Her Lap), Chekhairabi Malem (The Cracking Earth), Tas Chang- thokee (Bravo! You are the Perfect) and Awonba (Evolu- tion). Shri Rajendra Singh has published six plays and several seminar papers and has received awards and prizes for his work from organizations based in Manipur. At present, Shri Rajendra Singh is the Director of Panthoibi Natya Mandir, one of the leading theatre groups in Manipur. Shri Yumnam Rajendra Singh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to playwriting in Manipuri.
