Satish Alekar

Born on 30 January 1949 in Delhi, Shri Satish Alekar has made a significant contribution to contemporary Indian playwriting. A biochemist by profession, Shri Alekar has been associated with the Theatre Academy, Pune, from its inception. Several of his plays including Mahanirvan, Begum Barve, Shaniwar Ravivar, Micky ani Memsahib, Atirekee and Doosra Samna — have been translated from the Marathi, published and produced in Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada and English. Shri Satish Alekar has also written a number of screenplays for films including Jait re Jait which was adjudged the best Marathi film in 1977. He has directed and acted in several productions of the Theatre Academy and has conducted workshops for playwrights. He has attended international seminars and conferences on various subjects related to Indian theatre. Shri Alekar received the Veer Sawarkar Memorial Award in 1994 and the Nandikar Award in 1992. Shri Satish Alekar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Indian theatre as a playwright.
