Ashok Sagar Bhagat

Born in Ferozepur in Punjab in 1957, Shri Ashok Sagar Bhagat attended the National School of Drama in Delhi, where he qualified for his diploma in 1979. Shri Bhagat has been professionally practising stage lighting since the 1980s and has handled a variety of assign- ments in the theatrical arts. Much of his work in contempo- rary theatre has been seen in productions of the NSD Repertory Company, including plays such as Ibsen’s The Wild Duck directed by Bhanu Bharti, Shakespeare’s Hamlet directed by John Rattailic, Shudrak’s Mrichhakatikarn directed by Robin Das, Mohan Rakesh’s Ashadh ka ek Din and Vijay Tendulkar’s Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai directed by Ram Gopal Bajaj, and Vinod Kumar Shukla’s Diwar mein ek Khidki Rahti Thi directed by Mohan Maharishi. At the same time, Shri Bhagat has worked with leading theatre groups such as Habib Tanvir’s Naya Theatre, Shiela Bhatia’s Delhi Art Theatre, Barry John’s Theatre Action Group, and M.K Raina’s Prayog. He has been technical coordinator of a number of important festivals organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi including the Nehru Shatabdi Natya Samaroh (1989), the India International Dance Festival (1989), and the India Inter- national Puppet Festival (1990). He was on the technical team managing light and sound at the Festival of India in Japan (1997). The Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the Kathak Kendra, the Bharatendu Natya Akademi of Lucknow and Rangmandal Bhopal have also drawn upon his talents in organizing major arts events. Shri Bhagat has worked as art director in films such as Bandit Queen, directed by Shekhar Kapoor, and has travelled all over the world on assignments. He is at present an Associate Professor at the National School of Drama. Shri Ashok Sagar Bhagat receives the Sangeet Natak Akedemi Award for his work in stage lighting.
