Keremane Shambhu Hegde



Born in 1938 in Gunavanthe, Karnataka, Shri Shambhu Hegde received his training in Yakshagana from his father Shri Shivarama Hegde.He began performing as a member of the Sri Idagunji Mahaganapathy Yakshagana Mandali at a young age and is now the leader of the group. A versatile actor, he has played some 175 roles, male and female, in a large number of Yakshagana performances and has won wide acclaim at home and abroad. He has also brought about innovative changes in the repertoire and technique of Yakshagana. A doctoral thesis on his work in Yakshagana has been awarded a Ph.D. by the Karnataka University, Dharwad. A recipient of honours and felicitations from various organizations, Shri Hegde has recently participated in the Festival of India in China. Shri Keremane Shambhu Hegde receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Yakshagana.
