Jhamman Khan

Born on 8 February 1938 in Sisana village in Sonepat district, Haryana, Shri Jhamman Khan learnt playing the Nagara under Ustad Hassan Khan of the Ajrara gharana. Since the age of sixteen Shri Jhamman Khan has played this traditional drum accompanying Swang, the folk theatre of Haryana, and has worked with most of the professional groups in the State. The most outstand- ing and popular Nagara player of Haryana, he has also performed elsewhere in India and abroad. In 1989, he performed in Libya and Syria, and in 1994 in Ghana, Egypt and other countries in Africa. He has also lent his music in the Haryanvi films Chanderwal and Jattani. Shri Jhamman Khan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to folk music.
