Dilip Sarma & Sudakshina Sarma



Born in 1926 and 1934 respect- ively in Assam, Shri Dilip Sarma and Shrimati Sudakshina Sarma received their training in the music of Assam under a number of eminent teachers. Shri Dilip Sarma’s teachers included Jyoti Prasad Agarwala — whose compositions have a distinct place in the contempo- rary culture of Assam — as well as Bishnuprasad Rabha and Kamal Chaudhury. Shrimati Sudakshina Sarma also learnt from the two latter musicians, and has additionally been a student of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. Concert performers of long standing, the duo have been responsible for the propagation of Jyoti Sangeet in the region. They have also performed outside the North-east and travelled to China, Poland, Russia and the U.K. Shri Dilip Sarma has trained a large number of young musi- cians and lent his voice to several Assamese films and stage productions. Shri Dilip Sarma and Shrimati Sudakshina Sarma have been honoured for their work by several cultural organizations of Assam. Shri Dilip Sarma and Shrimati Sudakshina Sarma jointly receive the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for their contribution to Jyoti Sangeet of Assam.
