Born in 1948 in Ungma village in Mokokchung district of Nagaland, Shri Sangyusang Sangyuba Pongener was trained in the traditional music and dance of the region by Shri Sademmeren at the Naga Wadir institution in Ungma. In the 1960s he was actively involved in the students’ movement in Naga- land, and he has since been engaged in social work with a special emphasis on the performing arts. Shri Pongener has worked as an organizer and conductor of folk dance and music in Nagaland, and has made a significant contribution in promoting the performing arts of the State. He is also a noted actor and director in the Naga folk theatre, and is the author of several dramatic works in the Ao language. A well-known folklorist, Shri Pongener has produced four video films based on Naga narratives. The leading artist of his dance troupe, Shri Pongener has represented Nagaland in all- India festivals of folk dance. He has also participated in several workshops and seminars on the arts. Shri Sangyusang Sangyuba Pongener receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the traditional dance of Nagaland.
