Chukka Satthiah

Born in 1936 in Manikyapuram village in Andhra Pradesh, Shri Chukka Satthiah was trained in singing Oggukatha ballad by Shri Birla Illaiah and Shri Bandi Narashima in the mid-1950s. Today, he is the renowned lead singer and actor of an Oggukatha troupe whose appeal is widespread in the Andhra countryside. Shri Satthiah is also proficient in the Chirutala Ramayana theatre of rural Andhra Pradesh. For many years Shri Chukka Satthiah has led his Oggukatha troupe in performances that have been acclaimed not only in his own State, but also outside Andhra Pradesh. Since the mid- 1970s, he has performed on All India Radio and later Doordarshan, and since 1991 he has trained new entrants into his traditional art as an Instructor in the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad. For the last thirty years, Shri Chukka Satthiah has toured the country extensively under the sponsor- ship of the Song and Drama Division of the Government of India. Sangeet Natak Akademi too has presented him in important festivals of traditional performing arts. Over a hundred audio-cassettes of his music have been issued in Andhra Pradesh. For his service to Telugu heritage, Shri Chukka Satthiah has been honoured by the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University in 2000, and by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2001. Shri Chukka Satthiah receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the art of Oggukatha of Andhra Pradesh.
