Shri Daryao Singh Malik was born in 1938 in Ugrakheri village of Panipat district in Haryana. Though largely a self-taught artist, he benefited in his early years by training under Devi Shankar Prabhakar, a stalwart in Haryana’s theatre. Shri Malik is recognized as an outstanding comedian in Haryana's folk theatre. He has performed all over the State and also in other parts of the country from the 1960s up to the 1990s. Committed to social uplift, he has worked in campaigns conducted by Government and non-government organizations promoting literacy and countering the ills of rural society through his stage shows. He has similarly generated funds for schools, hospitals, and dharmashalas through his performances. Being a singer- actor, he has presented theatrical programmes on All India Radio from Delhi and Rohtak for a number of years. Shri Malik has acted in Haryanvi films including Chandrawal Lado Basanti, Phool Badan, Jar Joru aur Zameen, and the television serial Ek aur Ek Gyarah. Shri Malik received the Best Comedian Award conferred by the North India Film Association in 1985 and was honoured with the Haryana Gaurav Samman in 2004. Shri Daryao Singh Malik receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contri- bution to the folk theatre of Haryana.
