Puran Shah Koti

Born on 22 November 1952 in Shahkot village of Punjab, Shri Puran Shah Koti received his training in the robust music of the region from Shri Bakir Hussain Khan of Patiala Gharana. A popular performer, Shri Puran Shah Koti is known for his wide repertoire of the traditional and Sufi music of Punjab, and equally for the vigour of his singing.
Shri Koti has represented his State in many prestigious festivals in the country and abroad, including Canada, America, France and Bahrain. He is a graded artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and has to his credit a large number of recordings of the traditional music of Punjab. As a teacher he has trained a number of students such as Shri Hans Raj Hans, Shri Jasbir Jassi, and Shri Master Saleem.
For his contribution to the field of traditional music, Shri Puran Shah Koti has been honoured with the Shiromini Sufi Gayak Award (2008), and Gayak Award (2012) conferred by the Government of Punjab, the Life Time Achievement Award (2010) conferred by PTC Punjabi Channel, and the Baba Bule Shah Award conferred by Malwa Sabhyachar Manch.
Shri Puran Shah Koti receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014 for his contribution to the traditional music of Punjab.
