Ojha Tombi Singh



Born in 1905 in Yumnam, Manipur, Shri Yumnam Tombi Singh received his initial lessons in Pung — the Manipuri Mridang integral to Natasankirtan — from his father Y. Sanajaoba Singh and from K. Koklei Singh, S. Themba Singh and L. Koireng Singh. Y. Tombi Singh is well known in Manipur as an outstanding Pung artist. He has participated in Sankirtana widely within the State and has served at the Shree Shree Govindajee Temple in Imphal for several decades. As one of the seniormost Sankirtana artists of Manipur, he commands respect and admiration throughout the region. He has been honoured by the Government of Manipur in 1991 and by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad in 1997. Shri Yumnam Tombi Singh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Natasankirtan as a Pung-player.
