Born in 1953 in Elangkhanpokpi village in Manipur, Shri Elangbam Chaobhal Singh received his training in Natasankirtana from several eminent gurus including Thounaojam Amubi, Chung- kham Thambal Angou, Elangbam Ador, Thangjam Chaoba, Maibam Ibungohal and Elangbam Angahal. Subsequently, he became established in his practice as a Duhar Cholom performer and gained recognition in Nata Cholom of the Vaishnav Sampradaya. Shri Chaobhal Singh has also acquired proficiency in songs of Natasankirtana. As Principal of the Gulapi Natasankirtana Academy and as a Cholom guru at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal he has groomed several artists in Duhar Cholom. He has performed extensively in India and abroad, given lecture- demonstrations, and has parti- cipated in several seminars. His work has been recorded on various occasions, as at the Festival of Indian Culture in Italy (1988). For his service to Manipuri culture, Shri Elangbam Chao- bhal Singh has been honoured by several institutions. He received the Sabita Mehta Gold Medal awarded by the Jawa- harlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy in 1978, the Mayan- glamabam Ibobi Gold Medal conferred by the Manipur Sahitya Parishad in 1995, and the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award in 2000. Shri Elangbam Chaobhal Singh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Natasankirtana of Manipur as a Duhar Cholom performer.
