Born in 1949 in the village of Baprour in Punjab, Shri Jagir Singh received his training in Gurbani first from his father Bhai Uttam Singh and later under Bhai Bakhshish Singh. He also trained in classical music under Professor Yash Paul. Together with practical music, he undertook academic studies, acquiring Master’s degrees in music, in the Punjabi language, and in religion. He holds a doctorate for his research into the ‘Relation of Guru Poetry with Music’. An artist of wide renown, Shri Jagir Singh is today among the foremost Gurbani singers of Punjab. His renderings of Gurbani are keenly heard by the devout on various religious and cultural occasions. He has presented his art in many parts of India besides Punjab, and has also performed in the U.K., the U.S.A., and Australia. Shri Jagir Singh performs regularly on All India Radio, and has a large number of record- ings of Gurbani Keertan to his credit. He has also composed music and lent his voice in television productions including Hola Mohala andNihang Singh Ji. Shri Jagir Singh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Gurbani music of Punjab.
