Kashinath Pujapanda

Shri Kashinath Pujapanda was born in 1921 in Puri, Orissa. He received his training in traditional Odissi music and Mardala from Singhari Shyamasundar Kar and Harihar Rajguru at the Kalikakota Jagaghara in Puri. He also received training in Hindustani music under Dhiren Mitra. Shri Pujapanda has been a professional musician and a teacher of Odissi music since the early 1940s. He worked with All India Radio in Calcutta from 1941 to 1947 and since then he has been performing on the Cuttack station of AIR as well as Doordarshan, Bhubaneswar. He was at the forefront of the revival of Odissi music and dance in the 1950s, working as a teacher with institutions such as Utkal Sangeet Samaj in Cuttack, Lalit Kala Pitha in Bhubaneswar, and Orissa Sangeet Parishad in Puri. He headed these institutions as Principal and groomed a number of students in those years such as Indrani Mishra, Harihar Khuntia, Keshaba Rout, and Mohinimohan Pattanaik. His writings on the history, grammar, and technique of Odissi music have been published in various Oriya periodicals. For his service to Odissi music, Shri Kashinath Puja- panda has been honoured by a number of institutions in Orissa including the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi. Shri Kashinath Pujapanda receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Odissi music.
