Born in 1933 in Bardhaman Thakurpara, Tripura, Shri Subodh Debbarma initially trained in dance under his grandfather Maniram Thakur. He then applied himself to mastering the folk and tribal dances of Tripura under Harikant Debbarma and Budhu Chandra Debbarma. Subodh Debbarma has excelled as a performer of traditional tribal dances such as Garia, Mamita, Lebang and Jhum. He is proficient also in playing percussion instruments such as Dholak and Dangdung. He has travelled all over the north-eastern India for presenting his dance and music. To propagate his art, he has established his own institution, Bardhaman Thakurpara Loka- ranjan Sakha, where he imparts training to young people in the tribal dances of Tripura. He has been honoured by several institutions over the years. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of Agartala in 2000, and the Sarojini Smriti Award conferred by the Municipal Council of Agartala in 2007. He receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the tribal dance of Tripura.
