Kala Ramnath

Born in 1966 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Shrimati Kala Ramnath received her training in violin from Shri A. Narayan Iyer and Shrimati N. Rajam.She further honed her skills under the guidance of Pandit Jasraj. An outstanding exponent of violin, Shrimati Kala Ramnath has performed widely in India and abroad. Her music has been featured in the Grammy-nominated Miles from India project. Her compositions have appeared in the Grammy-winning album In 27 Pieces and the Kronos Quartet’s Fifty For The Future. The UK-based Song lines magazine hailed Kala Ramnath as one of the 50 world's best instrumentalists, and selected the album Kala as one of its best recordings. She was the first Indian violinist ever to be featured in the UK-based classical music magazine, The Strad. She was the subject of a solo essay in the third edition of the reference book – The Rough Guide to World Music. Her contributions feature in Hollywood soundtracks like the Oscar-nominated Blood Diamond, and many more. For her outstanding musicianship, Shrimati Ramnath has been honoured with many awards including the Rashtriya Kumar Gandharva Samman, and the title of Sur Ratna. Shrimati Kala Ramnath receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
