Born on 25 May 1935 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Shrimati Neela Ramgopal received her
training in Carnatic music from Shri N. M. Narayanan and Shri T.K. Rangachari.
An accomplished carnatic vocalist, Shrimati Ramgopal has published many books
including a book of 50 Tamil compositions in Kannada Script. She has conducted many
seminars and workshops on Carnatic Music, and has been associated with many
prestigious cultural institutions such as the Madras Music Academy, Chennai. She has
trained many students. A biography on her has been written by Shrimati Harini
Ragavan, titled Neela Ramgopal – A Musical Journey.
For her services to music, Shrimati Neela Ramgopal has received many titles and
awards including the Sangita Kala Acharya conferred by the Madras Music Academy,
Chennai (2011); the Sangeetha Kalarathna given by The Bangalore Gayana Samaja
(2003); and the Sangeetha Surabhi by Nadasurabhi, Bangalore (2015).
Shrimati Neela Ramgopal receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her
contribution to Carnatic Vocal Music.
