Born on 14 January 1962 at Cochin in Kerala, Shrimati Geeta Chandran
received her initial training under Shrimati Swarna Saraswati and later trained
under Gurus Shri K.N. Dakshinamurthi, Shrimati Jamuna Krishnan, and
Shrimati Kalanidhi Narayanan. She is also a trained Carnatic vocalist.
Shrimati Geeta Chandran has performed in major national and international
dance festivals across the country and abroad organized by prestigious
institutions like Sangeet Natak Akademi, Indian Council for Cultural
Relations, and the Ministry of Culture. Geeta Chandran is Founder-President
of Natya Vriksha, an organization devoted to promoting Bharatanatyam. She
is also Artistic Director of the Natya Vriksha Dance Company which
showcases her group choreographies which have been presented at major
dance events across the world and have received high appreciation. Shrimati
Geeta Chandran has authored a book titled So Many Journeys; and also
contributed articles for various journals. Presently she is imparting training to
young dancers at her institution in Delhi.
Shrimati Geeta Chandran is a recipient of several awards and honours
including the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2007.
Shrimati Geeta Chandran receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her
contribution to Bharatanatyam.
