Born on 25 June 1957 at Seraikella in Jharkhand, Shri Gopal Prasad Dubey has received
training in Chhau dance under gurus Rajkumar S.N. Singhdeo, Kedar Nath Sahoo and
Natasekhar Banbihari Pattanayak. He has also learnt Odissi dance under Shrimati Sharon
Lowen.
Shri Gopal Prasad Dubey has performed in many dance festivals, conducted workshops and
presented lecture-demonstrations on Chhau dance. Some of his notable performances include
Nritya Sangam, Cochin; Natyanjali Festival, Chidambaram, Kumbhakonam and Thanjavur;
Kalaghoda Festival, Mumbai; Bharatotsav, Kerala Sangeet Nrityotsav organized by Indian
Council for Cultural Relations, Hyderabad; and Chhau Parva organized by Sangeet Natak
Akademi at Bhubaneswar, Imphal and Nagaon. He has also performed at the Indian High
Commission, Kenya; Mithila Museum, Tokyo; LPK Tari Natya Lakshita, Indonesia;
Downtown Dance Festival, New York; Kalanidhi Fine Arts Festival, Toronto, Canada;
Symphony Space, Broadway, New York, under the aegis of World Music Institute;
International Drama Festival, Delphi, Greece; and Festival of India in Japan, Malaysia, China
and Vietnam on behalf of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Currently, he is teaching
Chhau dance at his institution Trinetra Chhau Dance Centre in Seraikella.
Shri Gopal Prasad Dubey has received several awards and honours including the Jharkhand
Award in 2007, and the Padma Shri in 2012.
Shri Gopal Prasad Dubey receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to
Chhau dance.
