Born in 1960 in Peyad, Kerala, Shri Gireesan V. graduated in commerce and had his basic training in folk and classical art forms of Kerala. He learnt the nuances of theatre under gurushishya parampara from Shri Kavalam Narayana Panicker for 33 years. Shri Gireesan started his career as an actor in Sopanam theatre group in 1983. His first performance was in Karimkutty – a Malayalam play directed by K.N. Panicker and the first appearance in Sanskrit drama was in Bhasa’s Madhyama Vyayogam. Thereafter, he performed major roles in Sanskrit and Malayalam plays directed by K.N. Panicker and others, and also assisted him in direction and choreography in Malayalam, Sanskrit, Hindi and English plays. Shri Gireesan has directed and choreographed many Sanskrit and Malayalam plays for school and college students. He has worked towards introducing and developing a methodology of acting in tandem with Natyasastra and martial art system of training in theatre. He has participated in various workshops and performances across the globe organized by many prestigious institutions. Shri Gireesan V. has been honoured by many institutions for his work as an actor including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award, Kalasree, in 2015. Shri Gireesan V. receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Indian theatre as an actor.
