Kartar Singh

Born on 3 April 1928 in Ghumanke village of Lahore district in undivided Punjab, Shri Kartar Singh was trained in Gurmat Sangeet by several teachers including Giani Gurcharan Singh, Bhai Sunder Singh Kasoorwale, Bhai Dalip Singh, and J. S. Bhanwra. Later, he honed his art under the guidance of Balwant Rai Jaiswal.
Among the foremost singers of Gurbani today, Shri Kartar Singh has at the same time pursued a career in the teaching of music. He has taught at several institutions, and trained a number of students. He taught first at Malwa Central College of Education, and later served as Head of the Department of Music at the Guru Nanak Girls College in Ludhiana. At present, he is Director of the Gurmat Sangeet Academy in Sri Anandpur Sahib, Ropar.
Shri Kartar Singh has performed at major festivals in India and abroad. Recordings of Shabads sung by him have been widely disseminated, and he has also authored several books on Gurbani Sangeet.
Shri Kartar Singh has been honoured by several institutions for his service to Indian music.
These honours include the Lifetime Achievement Award he received from the Punjab Cultural Society, Ludhiana, the title of Shiromani Ragi, the Gurmat Sangeet Senior Fellowship from Punjabi University, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2008). Shri Kartar Singh is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian music.
