KumarPillai Velukutty Nair

Born on 2 October 1926 in Mavelikkara, Kerala, Shri Kumarapillai Velukutty Nair received his training in the Mridangam from T.S. Moni Iyer of the Thanjavur Sampradaya. A performer of renown, Shri Velukutty Nair has also long enjoyed a reputation as a teacher of percussion. He has worked as Head of the Department of Mridangam at SST College of Music, Thiruvananthapuram, where he has trained a number of promising students such as V. Surendran, Parassala Ravi, and Hari Kumar. He has published many recordings of his music.
For his service to music over a lifetime, Shri Velukutty Nair has been honoured by several institutions. Recognizing his work as a teacher, the Music Academy, Madras bestowed on him the title Sangeetha Kalacharya. The Gayaka Ratna title was conferred on him by Sri Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Sabha of the same city.
Shri Kumarapillai Velukutty Nair receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Award for his contribution to Carnatic instrumental music – Mridangam.
