Born on 15 June 1932 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, Shri Zia Fariduddin Dagar learnt Dhrupad from his father Ustad Ziauddin Dagar and his elder brother Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar in the Dagarbani tradition of his family. Over a long concert career Shri Fariduddin Dagar has established himself as a leading vocalist known for the purity of his style. He has also distingui- shed himself as an eminent teacher and is currently Director and guru at Dhrupad Kendra, Bhopal. Among his disciples are Sarvashri Ritwik Sanyal, Uma- kant and Ramakant Gundecha, and Uday Bhawalkar. He has performed widely in India and abroad and has lectured extensively on Dhrupad. Shri Fariduddin Dagar received the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the Tansen Samman of Madhya Pradesh in 1993. Shri Zia Fariduddin Dagar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contri- bution to Hindustani vocal music.
