Born in 1927 in Bombay, Shri Dinkar Kaikini received his training in vocal music from Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, S.N. Ratanjankar and S.C.R. Bhatt and thereby assimilated the musical learning of the Gwalior and Agra gharanas. He also studied Kathak and Tabla under eminent masters like Pandit Acchan Maharaj and Mohanrao Kallianpurkar. Among the most learned exponents of Khayal today, Dinkar Kaikini has performed widely over a career spanning several decades. He has also been a successful teacher and has guided many musicians of the younger generation. He has produced a number of audio- cassettes and publications including Raag Rang, a collec- tion of his own compositions. A well-known music scholar, he has served on various commi- ttees and examination boards for music. Dinkar Kaikini has received several titles and awards for his work. Shri Dinkar Kaikini receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
