Birendra Kishore Roy Choudhury

I present to you, Sir, Shri Birendra Kishore Roy Choudhury. Born in 1903, Shri Roy Choudhury is an eminent musician and musicologist, and comes from a distinguished Bengali family noted for its patronage of music. Shri Roy Choudhury had his training mostly in instrumental music, though he has also been a keen student of Dhrupad. Trained under several eminent musicians like Sital Mukherjee, Amir Khan, Enayat Khan, Mohammad Ali Khan, Karamatulla Khan, Hafiz Ali Khan, Allauddin Khan, Sagir Khan and Dabir Khan, he is an accomplished performer on the Veena and the Sursingar. He represents the traditions of the Seni Gharana of Tansen. He has been associated with the music programmes of All India Radio, and the Music Faculties of Calcutta, Vishvabharati and Rabindra Bharati Universities. He has a number of books and research papers on music to his credit, most of them dealing with the history and philosophy of music. As President of the Gouripur Music Trust, he has been doing invaluable work in the collection and editing of rare Dhrupads. For his services to music the Sangeet Natak Akademi has elected him a Fellow of the Akademi.
