Asutosh Bhattacharya

I present to you, Sir, Dr. Asutosh Bhattacharyya.
Learned in the Sanskrit and Bengali literature, Dr. Bhattacharyya took a Doctorate degree in Bengali folk songs. His deep interest in all forms of folk art has led him to researches, the results of which have been published in many volumes. He is now held as an outstanding leader in this field. Dr. Bhattacharyya worked for several years in the Anthropological Survey of India first as a research associate in folk culture and then as Assistant Anthropologist in social anthropology. In this field his close association with Dr. Verrier Elwin was of inestimable value.
Dr. Bhattacharyya’s efforts received early recognition from Rabindra Nath Tagore, and later from universities and learned bodies. He has delivered, on invitation, a series lectures on folk culture at the Leningrad State University.
For his contribution in the field of folk culture, Dr. Bhattacharyya has been elected a Fellow of the Akademi.
