Ebrahim Alkazi

I present to you, Sir, Shri Ebrahim Alkazi. Born in 1925, Shri Ebrahim Alkazi graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London, in 1950. An associate of the Drama Board of Great Britain, he was awarded the starred certificate for work of outstanding merit by the British Drama League. He won the BBC Broadcasting Award in 1950. Shri Alkazi has directed and produced numerous eastern and western classical and modern plays in English and Hindi with distinction. Founder of the Theatre Unit's School of Dramatic Arts in Bombay, he later guided the Natya Academy, Bombay, as its Principal and now as the Director of the Akademi's National School of Drama in Delhi, he has contributed significantly to the establishment of serious theatre in the country. Shri Alkazi's zeal for his art has led him to the sphere of theatre design where he has made original contributions. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1966 and the Akademi Award for Stage Direction in 1962. For his contribution to the enrichment of Indian Theatre, Shri Alkazi has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
