I present to you Shri Adya
Rangacharya, recipient of the
Akademi Award for Play-writing.
Born in 1904, Shri Adya
Rangacharya had his training as
a linguist at the University of
London and began his career
in India as a University teacher.
After a short spell of teaching,
he settled down to the writing
and production of plays which
have ever since remained his
first love. A prolific writer and
versatile theatre worker, Shri
Adya Rangacharya has to his
credit twenty-eight full-length
and sixty one act plays, the
majority of which have been
performed. His active association
with a large number of
theatre groups in responsible
positions has helped him to
exercise a formative influence on
the theatre movement in the
Kannada-speaking region.
Though primarily a play-wright,
his literary output has been
many-sided and considerable.
He has written fiction, literary
essays, criticism, and commentaries
on classical treatises.
