I present to you, Sir, Shri Kota Shivarama Karanth. Born in 1902 at Kota, in Karnataka, Shri Karanth has been a versatile and prolific author whose contribution to both literature and the theatre arts has been immense. Through his unrelenting effort Shri Karanth has not only helped unearth and revive several forms of theatre in his region but has also given impetus to fresh thinking, experimentation and the search for new values in respect of theatre traditrons. The art of Yakshagana, the leading theatre form of Karnataka, owes a very great deal to Shri Karanth for its present vitality and popularity. Shri Karanth has been honoured by several learned and cultural bodies, both in India and outside. He has received recognition for his contribution to literature by Awards from both the Central and the State Sahitya Akademis. The University of Mysore and the Karnatak University have both bestowed on him Honorar y D. Litt. Degrees. Shri Karanth has also been honoured with the Padma Bhushan. For his eminence in the field of Theatre and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Shivarama has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
