Zubin Mehta

I present to you, Sir, Shri Zubin Mehta. Shri Zubin Mehta was born in 1936. He started studying the violin and the piano, at the age of 7 from his father Mehli Mehta. At 16 he left for Vienna where, apart from pursuing medical studies, he composed music and did spells of conducting at the Academy of Music. At 22, he earned the distinction of bagging the first prize at the Liverpool International Conductors Competition and, in the bargain, became Assistant Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. At the age of 26 he became the youngest permanent conductor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Shri Zubin Mehta has received honours in several countries. He has been awarded a special gold medal by His Holiness Pope Paul VI and received a commendation from Prime Minister Golda Meir of Israel. He is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan. Shri Mehta has led the Los Angeles Philharmonic to various countries and conducted its appearance at the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 1970. Shri Mehta has also conducted various orchestras in India. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Zubin Mehta has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
