I present to you, Sir, Shri Subrahmanya Ramanathan. Born in 1917 in Tamil Nadu, Shri Subrahmanya Ramanathan learnt Carnatic vocal and instrumental music from Shri T.S. Subhesa Iyer, T.K. Ponniah Pillai, Tiger Varadachariar and S. Krishna Iyengar. He was later drawn to ethnomusicology, securing a doctoral degree from Wesleyan University in 1972. As vocalist and Vainika Shri Ramanathan has had a long career, also as a teacher of Veena at Kalakshetra, Madras. He has taught musicology in the Central College of Carnatic Music, Madras, and lectured at several universities in the United States from 1964 to 1972. An important Indian representative in international forums of musicology, Shri Ramanathan has published numerous books and papers. His recordings include the Navagraha Krithis of Muthuswami Deekshithar which attracted wide attention. The Music Academy of Madras conferred on him the title of Sangeeta Kalanidhi in 1985. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Subrahmanya Ramanathan is elected Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
