Sushila Rani Patel

Born in 1920 in Madras, Shrimati Sushila Rani Baburao Patel received her initial training in vocal music from her mother Kamala Devi Tombat. Later, she studied under Ustad Alladiya Khan, Mogubai Kurdikal, and Sundrabai Jadhav of the Atrauli gharana. Shrimati Patel has performed in many prestigious festivals in India and abroad for several decades. Her music has also been regularly broadcast by All India Radio. A dedicated teacher, she has trained a number of students, and has given lecture-demonstrations of music at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai, and the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, University of Delhi. In 1989, she founded a public trust to promote young musicians. Shrimati Patel has been honoured by several cultural institutions for her work in the propagation of music in India and abroad. Shrimati Sushila Rani Patel receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribu- tion to Hindustani vocal music.
