M. Balamurali Krishna

Born in 1930 in Andhra Pradesh, Shri Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna is one of the outstanding personalities in Indian music. He received his training in Carnatic vocal music from P. Ramakrishnayya. In a career spanning five decades, he has established himself as one of the foremost exponents of Carnatic music. He is a highly popular vocalist as well as a prolific composer, who has created a number of new ragas and hundreds of composititions which are performed by reputed musicians and dancers. He is also an accomplished instrumentalist who plays the violin, viola, Kanjira, Veena and Mridangam. A noted teacher, Shri Balamurali Krishna has trained a large number of wellknown artists including Shri Ajoy Chakraborty, Prince Rama Varma, Shri Kamala Haasan, Shrimati Vyjayanthimala Bali and Shrimati Aruna Sayeeram. Shri Balamurali Krishna has participated in various prestigious music festivals wordwide and has a large number of published recordings to his credit. He has also lent his voice for playback singing in films, and has received national recognition as Best Playback Singer for the film Hamsageethe. For his outstanding musicianship, he has been honoured with the Sangeet Nataka Akademi Award (1975), the Padma Vibhushan (1992), honorary DLitts from the Rabindra Bharati and Hyderabad Universities, and the Kalidas Samman (2001). For his contribution to Indian music, Shri M. Balamurali Krishna is elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi.
