Born in 1929 in Multan, now in Pakistan, Shri Gursharan Singh has been active in street theatre for over three decades. He is the author of over fifty plays in Punjabi published in six volumes. As playwright, actor, and director, Shri Gursharan Singh has used theatre effectively for social change and civil rights. His work has had an impact on theatre in Punjab and has inspired a whole generation of theatre activists. Shri Singh established the Natak Kala Kendra, Amritsar, in 1964, where he has groomed a large number of theatre workers. Among other honours, he received the Best Playwright award of the Punjabi Academy, Ludhiana, in 1990. He was appointed President of Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1991. Shri Gursharan Singh recei- ves the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to theatre as a playwright.
