Govardhan Mishra

Born in 1941 in Lilua near Calcutta, Shri Govardhan Mishra received his training in music from his father Pandit Ramujee Mishra of the Benaras gharana.
A vocalist of renown, he has a large repertoire of Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, and Tappa compositions in rare ragas. He has performed in many prestigious festivals in India for several decades. His music has also been regularly broadcast by All India Radio. Being a dedicated teacher, he has trained many students, and has given lecture-demonstrations at a number of music institutions. For some years he taught at the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwa- vidyalaya, Khairagarh also. He has recorded a large number of traditional bandishes of Tappa, Thumri and Dadra at Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta. His compositions have also been recorded for Sangeet Natak Akademi archives. He has also researched in forms like Jhula, Kajri and associated regional traditions.
Shri Govardhan Mishra receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Hindustani vocal music.
