Born in 1913 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Raghunath Prasanna received his training in the Shehnai under his father Gauri Shankar and under Dauji Mishra. He established himself as a Shehnai-player of repute at an early age and worked as a Staff Artiste in the All India Radio stations at Lucknow, Allahabad and Ranchi. Afterwards he joined Benaras Hindu University, and finally served in the Song and Drama Division of the Government of India. He has trained a large number of successful Shehnai-players including his brothers Bholanath Prasanna and Vishnu Prasanna, his sons Rajendra Prasanna and Rakesh Prasanna, and Niranjan Prasad. He has pro- duced a number of records and cassettes. Shri Raghunath Prasanna receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
