P. S. Narayanaswamy



Shri Puliyur Subramaniam Narayanaswamy was born in 1934 in Anathandavapuram village in Tamil Nadu. He was groomed in Carnatic vocal music by Thirupambaram Somasundaram Pillai and Mudikondan Venkatarama Iyer during the 1940s and 1950s. From 1952 to 1962 he studied under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, his mentor in music, and has propagated the master’s bani among a new generation of musicians. Shri Narayana- swamy has also received training in the Veena under Kumbakonam Sastrigal. In a career spanning several decades, Shri P.S. Narayana- swamy has performed widely, spreading the rich heritage of Carnatic music. From 1975 to 1992, he worked in the Vadyavrinda section of All India Radio, composing orchestral music and conducting the ensemble. He led the joint orchestra of the Delhi and Chennai vadyavrinda in a performance commemorating the golden jubilee of the Chennai station. One of his achievements as a composer of Carnatic music is rendering the verses of Ramalinga Swami in a form suitable for concerts. Shri Narayanaswamy is also known for his competent performance of rakti ragas. Shri Narayanaswamy has given workshops on improvisa- tion, manodharma, and compo- sitions of the Trinity at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London. He has also issued several audio- cassettes. His students include well-known performers such as Padmini Ravi, Rajashri Ramakrishnan, and Bombay Gayathri. Shri P.S. Narayanaswamy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Carnatic vocal music.
