Shri Puranam Purushottama Sastry was born in 1925 at Nallapadu in Andhra Pradesh. He received his initial training in Carnatic music under Puranam Kamakaiah Sastry, Mulugu Sivananda Sastry, and Musili Subrahmanya Sastry, and was further groomed by several eminent musicians including Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, T.K. Ramachary, T. Brinda, Mayavaram Krishna Ayyar, and Sunderesha Ayyar. He received special training in the music of the Tyagaraja Sampradaya from Mahavaidyanatha Iyer. Shri Purushottama Sastry is well known both as a performer and teacher of Carnatic vocal music. He has trained a large number of students at the Nagarjuna Music College at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. His articles on Carnatic music have been published in several journals. He has also authored several books including Great Exponents of Carnatic Music. In recognition of his work in the field, Shri Purushottama Sastry has been honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Award of the Department of Culture, Government of India, the State Award of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and the Sangeeta Vidyanidhi title bestowed by the Andhra Pradesh Music Academy. Shri Puranam Purushottama Sastry receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Carnatic vocal music.
