R. Vedavalli

Born on 9 November 1935 in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu, Shrimati R. Vedavalli studied Carnatic vocal music under Shri Madurai Srirangam Iyengar, Shri Mudicondon C. Venkataramaier, Shrimati T. Mukta and Shri K.H. Mahadeva Bhagavatar. She has also received training in the Veena.
A leading Carnatic vocalist, Shrimati Vedavalli is known for her chaste, traditional style which has won her a following among discerning listeners. She is also a reputed musicologist, and has published her research in a number of journals. She is a distinguished teacher, and has taught at the Teachers’ College of Music, the Music Academy, Madras, and at the Tamil Nadu Government Music College from 1980 to 1994.
Shrimati Vedavalli has received several honours from instiutions and Sabhas. These include the title Kalaimamani, conferred by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram in 1995.
Shrimati R. Vedavalli receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Carnatic vocal music.
