Born in 1919 in Madras, Shrimati Vidya Shankar was groomed in music under Madras Sabapati Iyer, Shyama Sastry II and T.L. Venkatarama Iyer. She has served as Lecturer in musicology at the Central College of Carnatic Music and as Lecturer in music at Kalakshetra. She has many publications to her credit including volumes of notated compositions of Subbaraya Sastry, Annaswamy Sastry and Syama Sastry, complete with text, translation, and transliter-ation. She has also published articles on musicology, music teaching, and scientific aspects of music in journals in India and abroad. Shrimati Vidya Shankar has been honoured by various institutions for her work in music. She was bestowed the T.T.K. Memorial Award by the Music Academy, Chennai in 1998. Shrimati Vidya Shankar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribu- tion to Carnatic instrumental music.
