E. Gayathri

Born in 1959 in Madras, Shrimati E. Gayathri received her training in Veena from her father G. Ashwathama and her mother Shrimati Kamala. E. Gayathri started perfor- ming in her childhood and established herself as a Veena- player while still very young. She has performed in various prestigious festivals in India and also in France, the U.K., Malaysia, the U.S.A., and Germany among other coun- tries. She has researched extensively on the Veena and participated in important seminars. She has extended the frontiers of Carnatic music by working with Hindustani classical musicians as well as jazz and rock musicians of the West. She has played on All India Radio for almost three decades and has produced a large number of cassettes which have been popular in India and abroad. Shrimati Gayathri has received several honours for her work in music. The title Kalaimamani was bestowed on her by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram in 1987, and the Kumar Gandharva Award of the Madhya Pradesh Government in 1999. The title Sapthagiri Sangeet Vidwanamani was awarded to her by the Tirupathi Devasthanam in 2000. Shrimati E. Gayathri receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
