V. V. Subrahmanyam



Shri Vadakkencheri Veera- raghava Subrahmanyam was born in 1944 in Ernakulam, Kerala. He received his basic training in violin as well as Carnatic vocal music from his father V.S. Veeraraghava Iyer. His other teachers were Tripunithura Narayana Iyer, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhag- avathar, Musiri Subramanya Iyer, and Semmangudi Srini- vasa Iyer. He also trained in Hindustani music under Guru Krishnanand in the style of the Kirana gharana. Shri V.V. Subrahmanyam is a reputed violinist who has performed with many illustrious Carnatic vocalists in their concerts in India and other countries. He has also presented solo performances to high accclaim. Lecture- demonstrations and work- shops on the Carnatic violin by Shri Subrahmanyam have been presented at Wesleyan University in the United States and at several universities in Europe including Cologne, Hamburg and Osnabruck. He was Professor of violin at the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Madurai, from 1978 to 1982. He has published several books on the violin. For his service to music, Shri Subrahmanyam has been honoured by many sabhas. He received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for 1998-99 and was bestowed the Kalaimamani title by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram in 1993. Shri V.V. Subrahmanyam receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
