Kandadevi S. Alagiriswamy



Born in 1925 in the village of Kandadevi, Tamil Nadu, Shri Kandadevi Sundararaja Alagiri- swamy received his initial training in music from his uncle Shri Kandadevi Chellam Iyengar. He was later a student of the distinguished violinist Shri T. Chowdiah. Shri Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar was also his mentor in music. Shri Kandadevi S. Alagiri- swamy gained recognition as a violinist accompanying the renowned Alathoor Brothers — Madurai Mani Iyer and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar. He has also accompanied many other notable Carnatic vocalists including Shrimati M.S. Subbulakshmi, Shrimati M.L. Vasanthakumari, and Shri G.N. Balasubramaniam. He has performed widely over the years both as an accompanist and soloist. Among other honours, Shri Kandadevi S. Alagiriswamy received the title of Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1978. Shri Kandadevi S. Alagiri- swamy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
