Born in 1942 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Shri Prapan- cham Sita Ram received his training in flute under Shri Prapancham Srinivasaiah and T.R. Mahalingam. He also trained in vocal music under Sarvashri Prapancham Krishnamurthy, M. Balamurali Krishna, Sandhya- vandanam Srinivasa Rao, and Annavarappu Ramaswamy. He holds degrees in English literature from the University of Madras and Delhi University, and has received his PhD in music from Bangalore Univer- sity. Shri Prapancham Sita Ram is one of the leading performers of Carnatic music on the flute. He has travelled extensively in various countries and has contributed to Indian orchestral music as a composer. As a broadcaster and conductor of All India Radio’s Vadya Vrinda, he has earned the reputation of being a versatile musician. He has also been imparting training to a large number of young musicians. For his service to Carnatic music, he has been honoured by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram with the title Kalaimamani in 1983; he has also received awards from various Sabhas. Shri Prapancham Sita Ram receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Carnatic instrumental music.
