Born in 1920 in Madras, Shri Madras A. Kannan received his training in Mridangam under Shri Thanjavur Ramadass Rao. He also trained in Veena and vocal music under Shri Peethambara Desai and Krishnaswamy Naidu respectively. Shri Kannan has distinguish- ed himself in the field of Carnatic music by his innovative style and his mastery over rhythm. Over a long career on the concert platform, he has accompanied many eminent musicians. He has a large number of published record- ings with renowned Carnatic vocalists and instrumentalists. Shri Kannan has served as a staff artist of All India Radio, Chennai, and has taught at the Music College of Annamalai University and various private institutions. For his outstanding service in the field of percussion art, he has been honoured by various cultural institutions and Sabhas. Shri Madras A. Kannan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Carnatic instrumental music.
