Mallikarjun Mansoor

I present to you, Sir, Sri Mallikarjun Mansoor, one of the most distinguished musicians of the country. Born on December 31, 1910 Sri Mansoor received his initial training in music from Neelakanthabua of Miraj. Later he studied with Manji Khan and Bhoorji Khan, sons of Alia Dia Khan, the great exponent of the Jaipur (Atrauli) gharana. Dr. Mansoor is one of the leading vocalists of this gharana and has been honoured by several distinguished institutions. He was a recipient of the Akademi Award for Hindustani Music in 1971. The Government of India conferred on him Padmashri in 1970 and the Padmabhooshan in 1915. The Karnatak University conferred on him the degree of D. Litt. in 1975. He received the prestigious Kalidasa Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1981. At present he is honorary Director of Music in the Karnatak University. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment, Sri Mallikarjun Mansoor has been elected a Fellow of the Akademi.
